Answer
Charges for drawing on paper or the body, placing stencils, and consulting.
When you make a deposit the money is applied to the tattoo most of the time. This means your deposit pays for some or all of the work on your tattoo. However... If I draw for a goo-gob of hours to get a design you like I may charge a fee for my time. And... if I have to change the design for any reason I may charge a fee for my time. Note the use of the word "MAY" I generally do NOT charge for drawing, design, and/or research. --- it's uncommon for me to charge for drawing.
Drawing fees are less than the hourly rates for tattooing. I strive to be frugal in my design, drawing, reference research, color mapping, and redesign. As a client you often obtain the benefit of many hours of preparation for which you pay nothing... I also obtain a benefit from research and design, but... I shall be paid for time spent in your behalf when I require it. And... I'm the final arbiter of that decision.
I'll strive to let you know in advance, or during the process of design that I'll need to be paid for specific drawing/research and estimate the cost for you. As you know, creating art requires time and in our culture; time is money. When I spend 10, 20 or more hours on your design that means I don't get to tattoo someone else... or I lose part of my life to the process of tattoo preparation, so, I'm sure you'll agree, it is only fair to be paid.
I may charge for drawing on your body. I may NOT charge for drawing on your body; it really depends on the amount of time the drawing takes. If you're concerned about any fee... ask me! I'll let you know what I'm charging you for, but please... expect to pay for moderate or extensive drawing on your skin as part of your tattoo.
Placing stencils on your body is generally simple, swift and quick. For that; no charge. If however, the tattoo is large, wraps around body parts, is placed over awkward areas or needs to be moved several times, you may be charged for the time. --- it's rare.
I DO NOT charge a fee for your consultation as long as you get your tattoo from me, arrive on time, etc. I generally don't charge for concept drawing during the consultation process unless it takes hours. Most consultations take less than an hour. Few go beyond an hour. Some require a few hours. So, fees for drawing during a consultaion are only charged for those rare times where we need to spend a lot of time refining the work at the consult. --- it's rare.
